How it is calculated
L/100 km = litres ÷ km × 100 km/L = km ÷ litres MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ (L/100 km) MPG (UK) = 282.481 ÷ (L/100 km)The full-tank method is more accurate than the dashboard; repeat it a few times for an average.
Worked example
520 km driven and 36.4 L refilled: consumption = 36.4 ÷ 520 × 100 = 7 L/100 km, i.e. 14.3 km/L or 33.6 US MPG.
Frequently asked questions
L/100km or km/L?
Both are fine — lower is better for L/100km, higher for km/L.
Why is it higher than the official figure?
Official figures come from ideal test conditions; real consumption is usually 10–30% higher.
How do I cut consumption?
Correct tyre pressure, smooth driving, less load and regular servicing.
