How it is calculated
| Type | What is due |
|---|---|
| Fidya (elderly or chronically ill, unable to fast) | Feed one poor person per day |
| Delaying a Ramadan make-up past the next Ramadan without excuse | Make-up + feed one person per day (majority view; not Hanafi) |
| Kaffarah for a broken oath | Feed or clothe 10 poor people; if unable, fast 3 days |
| Kaffarah for deliberately breaking a Ramadan fast | Fast 60 consecutive days; if unable, feed 60 poor people |
Feeding amount: one mudd of food (about 0.5–0.75 kg) for the majority, half a sa’ of wheat (about 1.5–2 kg) for the Hanafis, a filling meal, or its value where permitted.
Worked example
An elderly person unable to fast Ramadan (30 days) where one meal costs 30: fidya = 30 × 30 = 900. An oath kaffarah at the same cost = 10 × 30 = 300.
Frequently asked questions
Can one poor person receive several days of fidya?
For fasting fidya most scholars allow it. For oath kaffarah the majority require ten different people.
Does kaffarah multiply with each day?
For the majority each day broken by intercourse needs its own kaffarah; for Hanafis one suffices for one Ramadan unless expiated in between.
Does deliberate eating require kaffarah?
Yes for Hanafis and Malikis; for Shafi’is and Hanbalis only intercourse does — all require making up the day and repentance.
