How to use it
Characters are counted as the reader sees them, so an emoji or an accented letter is one character.
| Platform | Limit |
|---|---|
| X (Twitter) | 280 |
| Google title | about 60 |
| Meta description | about 160 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
SMS: a plain-text message holds 160 characters; one with emoji or non-Latin letters holds 70, and longer ones split into 153- or 67-character parts.
Worked example
A 230-character post leaves you 50 characters on X. A 200-character SMS with an emoji is sent as 3 parts.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes in “characters”, no in “without spaces”.
Why did my SMS limit drop to 70?
One emoji or non-GSM character switches the whole message to Unicode, which allows 70 characters.
What is the ideal meta description length?
Around 150–160 characters; Google may cut longer ones.
